Two years after developing the original Traffic Safety for Kids, we were contacted to develop a new version based on the newer Kinect 2 sensor. The educational platform inherited many of the successful features of the first version. Like the original, the software was based on a Kinect sensor (this time a Kinect 2) as an interface device to simulate a virtual outdoor experience. Given the fact it was a brand new version, we also remastered the app’s graphics while also maintaining (and even improving) performance.
In a standard setup, the 3D environment is usually projected on a large screen in front of the user. The platform allows children to control their avatar’s movements in a natural way by the means of the Kinect’s skeletal tracking api. Using body gestures, kids have full control of their character in the projected virtual world. They can walk, turn, look around (by turning their head), show cyclists’ signals (i.e. turning, stopping, etc.) and switch on pedestrian crossing buttons by simply mimicking those gestures. It offers an exciting and intuitive way to teach kids road and traffic rules, road signs, safety tips and best practices without leaving the classroom. Furthermore, it enables teachers to spot common mistakes that children make, by the means of a specially designed testing and scoring system. It helps instructors make sure the kids don’t repeat those mistakes in the real world and on their way to school.
Aside the new Kinect 2 version, we also developed a virtual reality experience. You might be interested in checking out Traffic Safety for Kids VR
